Etna wine history
Vines have been cultivated on Mount Etna since ancient times, maybe from the beginning of the Bronze age, that is 4 or 5 millennium ago. The Greeks introduced new systems of cultivation and elevated wine to a deeply-rooted cultural phenomenon. Theocritus wrote about the vineyards on the slopes of Mount Etna in the 3rd century BC. Despite the difficulties due to the volcano eruptions and the presence of fine sands in the soils that damage the vines, the wines produced today on the slopes of the volcano are of an excellent quality. So it was Etna that received Sicily’s first DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) in 1968. At roughly between 450 and 1,250 meters altitude, Etna DOC follows a broad crescent clockwise around the contours of Etna, from inland Randazzo in the northwest, through Milo in the east around to Biancavilla in the southwest. 85% of production include dry red or rosé wines, with 15% of dry white.
