Cata nia, con il suo Porto a ridosso del centro storico è la città ideale i crocieristi, che anche in poco tempo possono godere della visione e del gusto di questa perla del barocco.
La visione e il gusto, i sensi che accompagnano la meraviglia della concezione barocca, sembrerebbero infatti i sensi propri del turista, la città di Catania, concepita come un grande teatro, si presta perfettamente a questo gioco, dove la magica visione dell’Etna, il più alto vulcano attivo d’ Europa, predomina su tutto e fa da sfondo alla via Etnea che comincia da Piazza Duomo, dove svetta la Cattedrale che custodisce le reliquie della Santa a cui la città dedica da secoli una delle tre feste piu grandi della Cristianità nel mondo: la Festa di Sant’Agata.
Qui, sotto il “Liotru”, l’elefante simbolo di Catania, il sacro si incontra con il profano nella coloratissima Pescheria, il mercato del pesce e delle arance rosse siciliane.
Da qui guardando in fondo via Garibaldi, un'altra quinta teatrale, la Porta Ferdinandea, andandogli incontro, vi troverete inaspettatamente, davanti allo scorcio dell’imponente maniero medievale dell’imperatore Federico di Svevia, il castello Ursino, un museo che custodisce dei preziosi vasi greci, reperti di epoca romana, e una collezione di dipinti dal xv al xix. sec.
Tornando alla via “maestra”, la via Etnea, disegnata dopo il terremoto del 1693 con un moderna concezione antisismica, godete delle sue scenografiche e ariose piazze, dove incastonati tra i Palazzi e le Chiese barocche troverete negozi e boutiques, bar e gelaterie in cui esercitare “il gusto” con le famose “granite” di mandorla accompagnate dalle briosche calde, i biscotti di mandorle, di pistacchio e i cannoli di ricotta, fino a raggiungere piazza Stesicoro, dove la visione del teatro romano custodito nel ventre della città si oppone a quella del  grande mercato all’aperto “a fera o Luni” che si tiene tutte le mattine.
Anche percorrendo le strade che intersecano la via maestra si possono scoprire tesori di architettura, dai Quattro Canti, il tipico crocevia barocco, la via di San Giuliano vi porterà alla tanto fotografata via Crociferi e ancora, verso l’antica Acropoli, al monastero dei Benedettini, il più grande d’Europa. Oltre il centro storico, a soli dieci minuti di macchina, la città moderna, qui per i patiti dello shopping chic, da Piazza Europa a Piazza Verga, si snoda Corso Italia, un elegante viale ricco di negozi veramente glamour, ma ancora più vicino al Porto, e addossato alla stazione Centrale, il Centro Fieristico Le Ciminiere dove oltre a trovare il Museo del Cinema e il particolare museo dello Sbarco,si può trovare qualche Mostra o evento fieristico interessante, oppure in appena due km., raggiungete il lungomare della scogliera lavica fino al borgo dei pescatori di San Giovanni Li Cuti e lasciatevi sedurre dalla bellezza...

Catania, with its wide Port close to the city centre, is the ideal city for you, who can enjoy even in short time the beauty and flavour of this pearl of the baroque.
Sight and taste, the senses which accompany the wonder of the baroque concept, are just the typical senses of the tourist, and Catania, thought as a great theatre, matches perfectly with these senses, showing its magical landscape, where the Etna, the highest active Volcano in Europe, overtops the city, acting as a natural background of via Etnea… …which starts from Piazza Duomo, where the Cathedral stretches skywards, keeping the relics of the patron Saint, to whom the city dedicates since centuries one of the three greatest feasts of Christianity in the world: the Feast of S.Agata.
Here, under the “Liotru” – the elephant, symbol of the city – the sacred meets the profane in the multicoloured “Pescheria”, the market of fish and of the Sicilian red oranges.
From here, looking at the end of via Garibaldi, you can see another theatrical wing: the Porta Ferdinandea. Going towards the Porta, you will find the unexpected view of the impressive medieval castle belonged to the emper or Federico II, the Castello Ursino, now a museum keeping precious greek vases, finds of the roman period, and a collection of paintings from XV to XIX century. Back to the main road, via Etnea, after the earthquake of 1693 designed with a modern earthquake-proof system, you can enjoy its spectacular and airy squares, where, set among wonderful baroque buildings and churches, you can find many stores and boutiques, coffee bar, snack bar and ice-cream parlours, where you can taste the famous “granita”, the crushed ice drink to eat with the hot brioches, the delicious almond or pistachio cakes, and the typical “cannolo” with ricotta. You will reach then Piazza Stesicoro, where the sight of the greek-roman amphitheatre compares to that of the great market, “a fera o Luni”, held every day in the open air.
Walking along the streets which cross the main road you can find some architecture treasures, too. From the Quattro Canti, the characteristic baroque crossroads, via San Giuliano will lead you to the artistic via Crociferi, and also to the ancient acropolis, and to the Benedictine monastery, the largest in Europe. Beyond the city centre you can reach in ten minutes by car the modern city. Here those who love shopping can reach Corso Italia, an elegant boulevard rich in very fashionable boutiques, stretching from Piazza Europa to Piazza Verga.
Closer to the Port, near the central Station, it is worth visiting the trade show centre Le Ciminiere, where you can find the Museum of Cinema, the characteristic Museum of the Landing, or some other interesting temporary exhibition or event.
Otherwise, just 2 km from the city centre, you can reach the promenade of the lava stone cliff, stretching to the fishermen suburb of San Giovanni Li Cuti.

Turning on the left via Collegiata, via Alessi, and on top of the stairs you meet via Crociferi, where the Churches of S.Francesco Borgia and of S.Giuliano can be admired. At the crossroad you meet via S.Giuliano. Going downhill and turning left you meet via Manzoni, piazza Stesicoro and the Roman Amphitheatre.

Departure from the Port: coming out on foot from the customs on the left, enter via Dusmet, as far as via Vecchia Bastione, going to piazza Duca di Genova, you meet the via Museo Biscari, at number 10 the Biscari Palace (Estate protected by UNESCO) coming out and taking via Landolina you arrive to piazza Teatro Massimo with the V.Bellini Theatre, returning to via Landolina you meet via Vitt.Emanuele, turning on the right you arrive to piazza Duomo, the Cathedral and the Municipal building (Estate protected by UNESCO) passing under the Arch (Porta Uzeda) and turning on the left, you come back to the port, turning on the right you meet the traditional fish market (Pescheria).
